Who is Gary?
I was born in England to Jamaican parents, but at the age of nine my life took an unexpected turn. After my school told my parents I had "no academic future," they made the courageous decision to move our family to Jamaica. Looking back, it's one of the greatest gifts they ever gave me. I'm forever grateful to my parents for believing in me when others didn't, and to the remarkable teachers in Jamaica who saw potential where others saw limitations. They didn't just educate me—they changed the course of my life.
While studying at the University of the West Indies, I met the woman who would become my wife. Nearly 40 years later, we're still happily married, still laughing together, and incredibly proud of our two wonderful daughters, who have inherited plenty of independence (and perhaps just a little stubbornness).
I spent 39 years building a rewarding career in the IT industry. Then, after decades of solving technical problems, I decided it was time to follow a dream that had been quietly waiting in the wings. Sometimes the best adventures begin when everyone else expects you to be winding down.
Who or what inspired you to write?
My wife actually asked me the same question. Her version was, "Where on earth is this coming from?" It was a fair question. She knows that at university I gravitated towards any subject that required the least amount of writing possible. Give me numbers or practical work and I was happy. Give me courses like History of the Caribbean or Use of English, where the more words you wrote the better, and I was... less enthusiastic.
So I decided to investigate. I called my mother in Jamaica and asked if there had ever been any signs that I might become a writer. She laughed and told me that whenever my parents left me with my grandfather, I would entertain him with elaborate stories. By the time my parents came to collect me, my grandfather would ask them about the adventures I'd described because he genuinely couldn't work out which parts were true and which I'd invented.
Apparently, I've been making things up for as long as I could talk.
Hearing that made something click. Storytelling wasn't something I'd suddenly discovered later in life—it had been part of me since I was three or four years old. Somewhere along the way, I simply packed it away and convinced myself it wasn't who I was.
The catalyst for unpacking it again came in 2020. I became seriously ill with COVID, and recovering from it changed my perspective. It reminded me how fragile life is and made me ask myself what kind of mark I wanted to leave behind. I realised I wanted to create stories that entertained people, made them think, and perhaps even stayed with them long after they'd turned the last page.
It turns out my grandfather saw the storyteller in me long before I did.
